The 90’s British music scene is what sets the mood for the 04 PRIMULA collection. It is a time that greatly influenced SOKO’s sense of style, and the music and artwork coming out of 4AD was a big part of it. “Music I was into, album covers I was drawn to, I would pick it up, and it would be 4AD. To me, it was very symbolic of that time. I really wanted to work with Nigel, a photographer who had shot many covers for artists at that label” (SOKO).
04 PRIMULAを包む90年代の”ブリティッシュ・ミュージック”のムード。SOKOのファッションやスタイルに大きな影響を与え、なかでも、イギリスの老舗インディレーベルである「4AD」の音楽やアートワークは特別な存在だ。「好きな音楽も、気になるジャケットも、手に取ってみると4AD。90年代の私の周りにはいつも4ADがあった。私の中では、あの時代を象徴していたもののひとつ。だからこそ、04 PRIMULAでは、4ADのジャケットのために撮影していた写真家のナイジェル・グリアソンとコラボレートをした」(SOKO）。
Nigel Grierson formed the unit "23 envelope" with graphic designer Vaughn Oliver. They go on to sign with 4AD and from 1981 to 1988, and work on numerous album covers, with Vaughan designing the covers using Nigel's photographs. Nigel’s photographs had an elusive atmosphere that was really in sync with the music of the artists.” Nigel has since left the label and continues to pursue his artistic photography.
ナイジェル・グリアソンは、アートスクールで出会ったグラフィックデザイナーのヴォーン・オリバーとともに、「23 envelop」というユニットを組み、4ADと契約。数々のアルバムジャケットを、ナイジェルの写真を使いヴォーンがデザインするという形で1981年から1988年まで数多く手掛けた。独特の世界観で貫かれたジャケットは多方面に影響を与え、今でも語り継がれる名ジャケットを残している。ナイジェルは「当時の私の写真が、波のようなつかみどころのないような雰囲気があり、アーティストたちの音楽とすごく合っていたんだと思う」と振り返る。その後レーベルでの活動から離れたナイジェルは、自己のアーティスト性を追求した写真家活動を現在に至るまで続けている。
For this collaboration, Nigel selected six images from his recent works for 04 PRIMULA and named each piece in relation to clothing. (“Thread”, “Stitch”, “Dyed”, “Frayed”, “Feathered”, and “Veil”). In addition to the posters he printed, one of his photographs were printed on SOWER’S slip dress, shirt, and scarf.
今回のコラボレーションでは、ナイジェルが近年撮りためていた中から6枚を04 PRIMULAのためにピックアップ。服との関連するものとして、ナイジェル自身により、それぞれに「thread」「stitch」「dyed」「frayed」「feathered」「veil」とタイトルもつけられた。ポスターやアートワークのほか、スリップドレスとシャツブルゾン、スカーフに転写した。
SOKO speaks of Nigel’s photographs of current day. “His photographs very much have the same personality from back then, but I noticed a lot of his subjects have geared towards nature. The photograph of a spider's web that he chose as the main artwork for SOWER is not recognizable as such at first glance, but the overall mood speaks very much Nigel. The fact that nature has become a main subject in these photographs is in tune with the overall theme of our brand”, says SOKO. The large poster displayed at the 04 PRIMULA exhibition expresses the intersection of music and fashion.
現在のナイジェルの写真の魅力を「撮り方は当時と変わらない彼の個性があり、月日を経て、被写体が自然に向かっている。メインのアートワークに選んだ水面の蜘蛛の巣の写真も、一見するとそれとはわからず幻想的。ネイチャーが主体になっている点は、SOWERのアイディアと通じる部分も感じた」(SOKO）。コレクションを披露した展示会に飾られた大きなポスターは、04 PRIMULAが表現した、90’Sの音楽とファッション、２つのカルチャーの交差点をあらためて指し示した。
